Malcolm Root was born in Colchester in 1950 and has lived in the north Essex town of Halstead ever since. He left school at sixteen and trained as a printing apprentice with a view to a career in design and typography. He left the printing trade in 1981 to become a full time artist. In 1983 he was elected a full member of the Guild of railway Artists, and in 2010 was given the prestigious title of Fellow by the Guild.

Malcolm has had four books of his paintings published, two of railway paintings and the other two of mixed twentieth century transport including road, sea and air. His work has also been used on calendars, greetings cards, collectors’ plates and jigsaw puzzles. He has always been interested in the period when trains and buses were used by the majority, and only the fortunate few could afford a car. Malcolm’s other hobbies are cycling, football and local history.
